Understanding KTM — Malaysia's National Railway

KTM, short for Keretapi Tanah Melayu (Malayan Railway), is Malaysia's national railway operator officially known as KTM Berhad (KTMB). The company has been the backbone of rail transportation across Peninsular Malaysia for over a century, today operating four distinct services that serve millions of passengers annually.

The flagship KTM ETS (Electric Train Service) runs high-speed intercity services along the electrified West Coast Main Line between JB Sentral (Johor Bahru) and Padang Besar at the Thai border, reaching speeds of up to 140 km/h. Key stops include KL Sentral, Ipoh, Butterworth (for Penang ferry), and Alor Setar. The ETS comes in two sub-types: ETS Gold (more stops, lower fare) and ETS Platinum (limited-stop express).

The KTM Komuter is the daily commuter backbone of the Klang Valley, operating two lines: the Batu Caves–Pulau Sebang/Nilai line passing through KL Sentral and Seremban, and the Tanjung Malim–Port Klang line. Trains run every 15–30 minutes, with KL Sentral as the central interchange hub.

The KTM Intercity (Jungle Railway) traverses Malaysia's remote interior, winding through tropical rainforest on a route dating back to colonial times from Tumpat (Kelantan) to Johor Bahru. Journey time for the full route is up to 18 hours. The Shuttle Tebrau provides a fast 5-minute cross-border link between JB Sentral and Woodlands CIQ in Singapore for just RM 5.
