Trains Tracking by Region: Every Network Covered
Live train tracking from Europe's high-speed corridors to South Asia's long-distance expresses, every major network in one platform.
The world's most connected rail network. High-speed trains link every major city; overnight sleepers cover the rest. Advance tickets can save up to 80% off the walk-up fare.
Japan's Shinkansen is the world's most punctual rail network, average delays measured in seconds. China's high-speed network is now the largest on earth at 40,000+ km.
Indian Railways connects 7,300+ stations and is the world's fourth-largest network. Pakistan Railways covers major intercity corridors with AC and economy classes.
Amtrak's long-distance routes are unmatched for scenery, the California Zephyr crosses the Rockies over 51 hours. Book Saver fares early for the best prices.
Track Trains, Save Time: Rail vs Plane Door to Door
For city pairs under 800 km apart, trains frequently beat flying once you account for airport check-in, security queues, and transfers, and you arrive at the city centre, not an airport 45 minutes away.
Door-to-door time comparison
Door-to-door estimates including airport/station transit time. Train wins highlighted.

Common train tracking queries
Eco Friendly Train Travel with Live Train Tracking
Train travel produces around 90% less CO2 per passenger kilometre compared to short haul flights. By choosing rail over air for journeys under 1,000 kilometres, a typical traveller cuts journey emissions from roughly 55 kg per person on a London to Paris flight to just 6 kg on the Eurostar. Our trains tracking platform makes it easier to choose rail by giving you accurate journey times, fare comparisons and live status updates so you can plan with confidence.
Electric high speed trains across Europe, Japan and China run on increasingly green electricity grids, lowering the carbon footprint of every journey further every year. Night sleeper trains save both flight emissions and a hotel night. Use the live train tracker to find the next eco friendly rail service between your origin and destination, then book directly with the official operator.
Trains Tracking FAQ: Common Questions Answered
Everything you need to know about using TrainsTracking for live train tracking, schedules, and travelling by train.
Is TrainsTracking free to use?
Yes, completely free. Schedule search, fare comparison, live delays, and station lookup require no account and no subscription. The developer API includes a free tier for moderate usage.
How accurate is the schedule data?
Schedules come directly from official GTFS feeds and published timetables, updated daily. Live delay data is pushed from 19 official railway APIs every 30 seconds, we don't scrape or infer anything.
Can I book tickets here?
TrainsTracking is an information and comparison platform. Each listing links directly to the official operator booking page, National Rail, IRCTC, DB Navigator, Amtrak, so you pay the published fare with no markup.
Which countries are covered?
150+ countries across all six continents. Coverage is deepest in Europe, Japan, India, Pakistan, and the USA. Browse everything at the Countries page.
Is it cheaper to book in advance?
Almost always yes. UK Advance fares open 12 weeks out; French Prems fares up to 4 months out; German Sparpreis fares can save 60%. Indian Railways opens booking 60 days before departure.
Rail pass vs point-to-point tickets, which is better?
Passes suit travellers making multiple long-distance journeys in a short period. For trips with fixed dates, advance point-to-point tickets are usually cheaper. See our detailed guide in the blog.
What train classes are available?
Most railways offer Standard and First Class. Long-distance trains add Business class. Overnight services offer Seat, Couchette (shared bunk), and Sleeping Car (private compartment). Indian Railways has six distinct classes.
How do I check if my train is on time?
Open the route or station page and look for the live status badge. Networks with real-time feeds (UK, Germany, Japan, France, and others) show colour-coded on-time, delayed, or cancelled status updated every 30 seconds.
What is GTFS and how is it used here?
GTFS (General Transit Feed Specification) is the open standard railways use to publish timetable data. GTFS-RT extends it with real-time vehicle positions and delay updates. TrainsTracking ingests both to power all schedule and live data.
Is there a developer API?
Yes. The TrainsTracking API provides JSON access to schedules, stations, fares, and live status for all supported networks. A free tier covers moderate usage; paid plans scale for production applications. Docs at /api-docs.

How to book train tickets
The golden rule of train booking is simple: the earlier you book, the cheaper the fare. Most European railways release their cheapest advance fares three to four months before departure, non-refundable but 50–80% cheaper than the walk-up price. In the UK, Advance fares open exactly 12 weeks before travel; on popular routes like London to Edinburgh on a Friday evening, the cheapest seats sell out within hours of release.
In France, SNCF releases Prems fares up to four months ahead. Germany's DB offers Sparpreis tickets via the DB Navigator app, book early for ICE and IC services. Spain's Renfe releases deep-discount Promo fares for AVE high-speed routes that can be a fraction of the Flexible price.
For South Asia, Indian Railways opens reservations through IRCTC 60 days before departure. Tatkal quota, available one to two days before travel, costs a fixed premium and is the go-to for last-minute bookings. Pakistan Railways offers online booking via booking.pakrail.gov.pk up to 30 days ahead for most express services including the Green Line and Karakoram Express.
For long-distance Amtrak journeys in the USA, Saver fares offer the biggest discounts and open up months before departure for flagship routes like the California Zephyr and Coast Starlight. Booking the full point-to-point journey at once is almost always cheaper than breaking it into segments.
Choosing the right travel class
Train classes vary by country and operator, but most railways offer a clear hierarchy from economy to premium. In Europe, Standard (Second) Class is entirely comfortable on high-speed services, the seats are larger than most airline economy seats, with table space and power sockets standard on ICE, TGV, and Eurostar trains. First Class adds wider seats, more legroom, quieter carriages, and often complimentary drinks on long-distance services.
For overnight journeys, accommodation type matters more than ticket class. A couchette, a fold-down bunk in a shared 4- or 6-berth compartment, is affordable and practical for most European sleeper journeys. A full sleeping car with private or semi-private compartments and proper flat beds costs more but lets you arrive genuinely rested. The ÖBB Nightjet network offers all three on routes across Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
Indian Railways uses a unique six-tier class system: Sleeper Class (non-AC), 3AC, 2AC, 1AC (most premium), Chair Car, and Executive Chair Car. For long overnight journeys, 3AC offers the best value, air-conditioned with clean linens at a reasonable price point. Pakistan Railways offers AC Business, AC Standard, and Economy seating on its main express services.
Japan's Shinkansen offers Ordinary (like first class on European trains), Green Car (premium), and Gran Class (the most luxurious seat product in the world). For most travellers, Ordinary is more than sufficient.
Rail passes vs point-to-point tickets
The Eurail Global Pass and Interrail Global Pass give unlimited train travel across 33 European countries for a fixed price over a set period. They sound convenient, and they can be, but they are not always cheaper than buying individual tickets. The key question is: how many long-distance journeys will you make, and have you booked far enough ahead to access cheap advance fares?
As a general rule, if you are making more than three or four long-distance journeys within a 10–15 day period and cannot access cheap advance fares, a rail pass often saves money. If you have fixed dates and are travelling between two or three specific cities, advance point-to-point tickets will almost always be cheaper. Note that many high-speed trains (TGV, Eurostar, Thalys) require a compulsory seat reservation fee even with a Eurail pass.
Country-specific passes can be excellent value for intensive single-country travel. Japan's JR Pass breaks even if you take roughly three Shinkansen journeys in seven days, a Tokyo–Kyoto–Hiroshima return trip covers the cost of a 7-day pass. Switzerland's Travel Pass covers trains, buses, boats, and many mountain railways and is often the best option for a week of Swiss exploration.
Germany's Deutschland-Ticket (€58/month) covers all regional trains, S-Bahns, U-Bahns, buses, and trams across the entire country. It does not cover ICE or IC high-speed trains, but for regional travel and exploring German cities by public transport, it is exceptional value.
