Italy's Rail Operators
Italy has two competing high-speed operators: Trenitalia (state-owned, runs Frecciarossa and Frecciargento) and Italo (private, runs EVO trains). Both serve the main north-south corridor: Milan–Bologna–Florence–Rome–Naples. Competition keeps prices low — fares from EUR 9.90 on Italo and EUR 14.90 on Trenitalia when booked in advance. Regional trains (Regionale) are Trenitalia-only and cover smaller cities and scenic routes.
Frecciarossa vs Italo
Frecciarossa 1000 reaches 300 km/h and offers four classes: Standard, Premium, Business, and Executive. Italo EVO trains are slightly slower (250 km/h) but offer Smart, Comfort, Prima, and Club Executive classes. Italo is often slightly cheaper on popular routes. Both allow free seat selection and have onboard catering. Milan–Rome takes 2h 55m on Frecciarossa, 3h on Italo.
Booking & Best Fares
Book at trenitalia.com or italotreno.it. Trenitalia's 'Super Economy' fares and Italo's 'Low Cost' tickets are non-refundable but cheapest. Book 60-90 days ahead for best prices. Trenitalia also sells via Trainline, Rail Europe, and the Trenitalia app. The Italy Rail Pass (from Eurail/Interrail) is worth it only if you plan 6+ journeys — otherwise point-to-point is cheaper.
Regional & Scenic Trains
Cinque Terre is accessible only by regional train from La Spezia or Levanto — no reservations needed. The Bernina Express (crossing into Switzerland) and the Circumvesuviana (Naples–Pompeii–Sorrento) are iconic scenic routes. Sicily is reachable by train via a ferry crossing at Villa San Giovanni — the train is loaded onto a ferry. Sardinia has a separate narrow-gauge network not connected to the mainland.
